Life Path Number Calculator

The life path number is the central figure in numerology. It is derived from the full birth date and is traditionally read as describing the shape of a life — its recurring themes, its characteristic difficulties, and the ground a person keeps returning to.

This calculator reduces the month, day and year separately before summing them, which is the method that correctly preserves master numbers. It reports the compound as well as the reduced digit, so a life path of 1 arrived at through 10 is distinguishable from one arrived at through 19 — a distinction many calculators discard. Enter a name as well and it returns the expression, soul urge and birthday numbers alongside, in either the Pythagorean or the Chaldean letter system.

How to calculate your life path number

  1. Enter your full birth name. Use the name as originally given; that is the convention the letter-based numbers assume.
  2. Enter your date of birth. The life path comes from this alone, so it is the one field that must be exact.
  3. Choose a letter system. Pythagorean is the common Western default. Chaldean assigns different values and yields different name numbers.
  4. Read the compound and the reduced number. Both are shown. The compound carries detail the single digit loses.

How the life path is calculated

Reduce the month, the day and the year each to a single digit or a master number, then add the three results and reduce once more. For 10 December 1815: the month 12 reduces to 3, the day 10 reduces to 1, and the year 1815 gives 1+8+1+5 = 15, which reduces to 6. Adding 3+1+6 gives 10, which reduces to a life path of 1 — recorded as 10/1 so the compound stays visible.

The order matters. Summing every digit in one pass gives the same answer often enough to look equivalent, but it destroys master numbers that would have survived the segmented method. Where the two disagree, the segmented reduction is the one the tradition specifies.

Master numbers

When a reduction lands on 11, 22 or 33, it is held rather than reduced further. These are read as carrying the qualities of their reduced digit at a higher intensity and with a correspondingly higher difficulty — 11 as an intensified 2, 22 as an intensified 4, 33 as an intensified 6. A minority of practitioners include 44; this calculator follows the more common three.

The other numbers

The expression or destiny number comes from every letter of the full name and is read as natural aptitude. The soul urge uses only the vowels and is read as underlying motivation. The birthday number is simply the day of the month, treated as a specific talent. Each is reported here with its compound intact.

Pythagorean assigns 1 to 9 across the alphabet in order. Chaldean, which is older, assigns values by sound rather than sequence and never uses 9. They produce different results from the same name, and neither is a corrected version of the other.
